I’ve been diving deep into planning my next big adventure, and like most people, I initially had my eyes set on the Serengeti. However, the more I read, the more I’m leaning towards the southern circuit of Tanzania. I’m looking for something a bit more raw, less crowded, and ideally, a place where I can actually get out of the vehicle for a change.
From what I’ve gathered, the Southern parks offer a totally different vibe. I’m particularly interested in a selous game reserve safari because I’ve heard the boat safaris there are incredible. Being on the Rufiji River and seeing hippos and crocs from the water sounds like a dream compared to just sitting in a dusty Jeep all day. Plus, I’ve heard it’s one of the few places where you can actually do walking safaris legally and safely.
Has anyone here been recently? I’m trying to figure out if the wildlife sightings are as consistent as the northern parks. I’m not just looking for the Big Five; I really want to see the Wild Dogs (Painted Wolves), and I heard the South is their stronghold.
I actually found a really detailed breakdown of the logistics and the best time to visit on this site: selous game reserve safari. It helped me understand the bush plane situation, but I’d still love some first-hand "boots on the ground" advice from this community.
Is the fly-camping experience worth the extra cost, or should I stick to the permanent lodges? Any specific camp recommendations that don’t break the bank? Thanks in advance!
