Skin color is primarily determined by melanin, a natural pigment produced by cells called melanocytes. When these cells become more active, they produce excess melanin, which causes the skin to look darker. While this process is natural and protective, excessive or uneven melanin production can result in noticeable darkening that raises questions and concerns.
One of the most common reasons people say their Skin Got Darker is increased exposure to sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin as a defense mechanism. This response protects the skin from DNA damage but also results in tanning and pigmentation. Even people who do not spend long hours outdoors may experience skin darkening due to everyday exposure while commuting, walking, or sitting near windows. UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin and cause long-term pigmentation, while UVB rays lead to immediate tanning and sunburn. Without consistent sunscreen use, this daily exposure accumulates and gradually darkens the skin, particularly on exposed areas like the face, neck, hands, and arms.
