When we want to show something complicated or a large area on a map, especially when Vector Map Illustrator are concerned, it is not super obvious how to simplify or streamline the map to be provided as a completed vector graphic (all vector maps should be either direct or finally result in a vector file). A more detailed map can interfere with the visual flow and clutter the design (potentially conflicting) through too much detail. Conversely, if we remove detail, we might be eliminating contextual or important detail. Oftentimes, it is helpful to focus on the essential features of a vector map illustration, which I find are the boundaries, landmarks, and key routes through the map. You can also use tools that are compatible with scalable vector graphics. Recently, I saw a great example of how clean a vector map illustration can be, balancing between accuracy and simplicity, through Geoshot Technologies: Geoshot Vector Map Illustrations. Have any others (personally or as part of a team) successfully illustrated maps by combining manual editing and automated tools?
