The Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA) of New Jersey, enacted in 1991, provides protection for victims of domestic violence and establishes legal consequences for offenders. This law recognizes 19 predicate acts of domestic violence, including assault, harassment, stalking, and sexual assault. It applies to Prevention of Domestic Violence Act New Jersey individuals in current or former relationships, including spouses, dating partners, and household members.

Victims can seek immediate Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs), which may later become Final Restraining Orders (FROs) after a court hearing. Violating a restraining order results in criminal penalties. The PDVA also allows courts to provide emergency relief, including temporary custody of children and financial support.
