What is Nasal Cannula?
A Nasal Cannula is a lightweight, flexible device used to deliver supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory conditions. It consists of a soft plastic tube that splits into two prongs, which are inserted into the nostrils. The other end connects to an oxygen source, such as an oxygen concentrator or cylinder. This device is commonly used in hospitals, home care, and emergency situations due to its comfort and ease of use. Unlike oxygen masks, a Nasal Cannula allows patients to speak, eat, and move freely while receiving oxygen therapy.
Nasal Cannula Flow Rate
The Nasal Cannula Flow Rate refers to the amount of oxygen delivered per minute. Typically, it ranges from 1 to 6 liters per minute (LPM) in standard use, providing an oxygen concentration of about 24% to 44%. High-flow Nasal Cannula systems can deliver up to 60 LPM, offering enhanced oxygenation for critically ill patients. Proper flow rate adjustment ensures effective therapy while minimizing discomfort.
