Delicious Dal Fry Recipe: Authentic Restaurant-Style Lentil Delight

Ingredients:
• 1 cup split yellow lentils (toor dal)
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
• 1 green chili, slit lengthwise
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
• 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
• 1 teaspoon red chili powder
• 1 teaspoon garam masala
• 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
• 2 tablespoons ghee or cooking oil
• Salt, to taste
• Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish
• 1 lemon wedge, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Lentils:
o Rinse 1 cup of split yellow lentils under cold running water until the water runs clear. Transfer the lentils to a pressure cooker and add 2 cups of water. Cook for about 3-4 whistles, or until the lentils are tender and fully cooked. Once done, set them aside.
2. Create the Tempering:
o Heat 2 tablespoons of ghee or cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter, then add 1/2 teaspoon of asafoetida.
3. Sauté Onions and Chilies:
o Add the finely chopped onion and slit green chili to the pan. Sauté the mixture until the onions become golden brown and translucent.
4. Cook the Tomatoes:
o Add 2 chopped tomatoes to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil begins to separate from the mixture.
5. Add Spices:
o Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of red chili powder, and 1 teaspoon of garam masala. Mix well and let the spices cook for a couple of minutes.
6. Combine Lentils with the Spices:
o Add the cooked lentils to the pan, stirring well to combine with the spiced onion-tomato mixture. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Season with salt to taste.
7. Garnish and Serve:
o Garnish your Dal Fry with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice or naan. For an extra zing, you can serve with a wedge of lemon.
