Ranitidine 150 mg, a histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonist used to reduce stomach acid and treat conditions like ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is no longer widely used due to safety concerns. In 2019, it was discovered that some ranitidine products contained elevated levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potential carcinogen. NDMA is a substance that can cause cancer when consumed in high amounts over time.
Following these findings, regulatory agencies, including the FDA and EMA, advised removing ranitidine products from the market to protect public health. The discovery prompted further investigations and recalls of ranitidine-containing medications.
Alternative medications, such as other H2 blockers like famotidine, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole, are now recommended for acid-related conditions. These alternatives do not carry the same cancer risk associated with ranitidine and provide effective treatment for managing stomach acid-related issues.
